2. C O L L A B O R AT I O N S A N D S T U D I E S
M2i2’s global strategic collaborations focus on: health information technology / digital health and access
to data and external analysis. They leverage Merck’s scale and expertise to enhance data-driven approaches, improve
population health and clinical care, and support patient engagement while giving Merck access to leading-edge talent,
innovation and opportunities in the context of marketplace changes driven by the Affordable Care and HITECH Acts.
Northwestern
Maccabi
StartX
M2i2 is collaborating with Northwestern
University, Alliance of Chicago, and Walgreens
on a landmark health IT interventional study
evaluating the impact of providing simplified
and clear medication instructions. Currently,
physician practices and pharmacies use
different electronic record systems for writing
prescriptions and translating them onto the
medicine label.
Maccabi Healthcare, one of Israel’s largest
health systems, has over 20 years of clinical
and claims data history. Maccabi and Merck
will apply technical and information research
capabilities to draw insights from Maccabi’s
data to support personalized health care
delivery strategies across several therapeutic
areas, including prevalent and costly
chronic diseases.
Merck joined StartX, a Stanford University
non-profit spinoff in the heart of Silicon Valley,
as a corporate partner to provide strategic
guidance to promising health technology
entrepreneurs to build innovative healthcare
solutions. As a corporate partner, Merck will
have access to disruptive innovations in data,
analytics and digital health as well as exposure
to world class talent and ideas.
Regenstrief Institute
Humedica (Optum)
Merck’s multi-year partnership with the
Regenstrief Institute is a novel collaboration
between a pharmaceutical company and a
health information exchange. The scale of
the Institute’s data assets (approximately 13M
unique patients) combined with their
informatics capabilities will allow Merck to
advance our insights in osteoporosis, HPV,
diabetes and oncology.
Researchers across Merck are utilizing
Humedica's clinical intelligence platform
to derive real world insights. Moving beyond
claims-based analysis, the Humedica asset
captures lab results, vital signs and includes
unique natural language processed data
that supports Merck’s observational research
efforts in real-world settings.
CBMI at Harvard
Medical School
Health Data Consortium
PatientsLikeMe
(Merck | HPN ACO Challenge)
HDC brings together organizations from
government, non-profit and the private sector
to advocate for open, intelligent use of data to
improve health. As part of the Consortium,
Merck and Heritage Provider Network, an ACO,
are hosting an innovation challenge – the first
pharma/ACO collaboration of its kind – to find
solutions that improve care plan adherence.
PatientsLikeMe, a patient network with over
250,000 members, helps increase
understanding of the real-world disease
burden of a variety of conditions. The
community facet of PLM’s platform unlocks
insight into patient perspectives that helps
patients learn from each other and will help
Merck's researchers better understand patients
and develop more effective solutions.
The Center for Biomedical Informatics created
the Informatics for Integrating Biology & the
Bedside (i2b2) platform, adopted by over 100
academic health centers in linking their EMR
systems with biobank and genomic information.
CBMI’s expertise in digital libraries enables
Merck to co-develop methodology to analyze
the pathophysiology and underlying
mechanisms of insomnia and physician
prescribing behavior.
Boston Children’s
Hospital | Harvard
M2i2 is working with the premier computational
epidemiology lab in the US on an unique study
analyzing data from Twitter to create digital
definitions for insomnia. This research also aims
to contribute new and meaningful information
to the scientific community on the predictors
of sleep deprivation based on social
media-related behaviors.
Practice Fusion
CECity
Huaxi Hospital
M2i2 is accelerating care delivery innovation
by partnering with Practice Fusion, a cloudbased EMR provider engaged in point-of-care
CDS and population health management.
Merck and Practice Fusion are co-developing
communications to roll into the CDS and the
EMR intelligence platform to help improve
quality of care.
CECity, a cloud-based technology company,
is collaborating with the National Bone Health
Alliance, NOF and three academic medical
centers in a demonstration study to assess the
potential to improve quality of care in patients
with osteoporosis. CECity will use their platform
to study the ability to scale quality improvement and coordinate care to address care gaps
and drive improvement for post-fracture
patients.
M2i2 is supporting a novel research
collaboration with West China Hospital of
Sichuan University (Huaxi Hospital), the
largest single-site hospital in the world and
a leading medical center of West China, to
explore the impact of diabetes on mortality
in non-ICU inpatients.
Allscripts
Smart Patients
M2i2 is accelerating care delivery innovation
by partnering with Allscripts, a healthcare
IT focused company and EMR provider.
Merck and Allscripts are co-developing CDS
content based on industry guidelines
that would be accessible through the EMR
at the point-of-care.
Smart Patients is an online community where
cancer patients and caregivers learn from each
other about treatments, clinical trials and the
latest scientific breakthroughs. Merck is
leveraging real-world insights from the Smart
Patients network to better understand patient,
clinician and caregiver voices and perspectives.
