help understand angles in molecules. Is fun to
use. With practice learners will find use of the
protractor easy.

The molecular model basic toolkit is
developed by Konrad Hinsen who has
used it to build nucleic acids and the
DNA helix.

Attempt to make a molecule ethanol and
glucose.

construct

molecule
of ethanol

Ethanol is tetrahedral around the central oxygen
atom. If the molecule were perfectly symmetrical, the
bond C-O-H bond angle would be 109.5 degrees.
However, due to the 2 lone pairs of electrons on the
oxygen atom, the chemical bonds are pushed closer
together by about 2 degrees per lone pair on the
oxygen atom (to minimize lone pair-lone pair
repulsions, see Wikipedia article of VSEPR for a
clearer explanation). So the bond angles of ethanol
is approximately 104 degrees.
