- 2. The Anniston / Oxford metro area along with Calhoun County has struggled over the past 20 years. Things got started with the closure of Fort McClellan in the 1990’s. The Bad News About Anniston/Oxford Then the CBS program “60 Minutes” named the Anniston area as the dirtiest city in America thanks to pollution from Monsanto. The program said about Anniston. "Imagine a place so saturated with toxic, cancer-causing chemicals that it's in the dirt people walk on, the air they breathe - even the blood that pumps through their veins. The 24,000 people living in Anniston, Ala., don't have to imagine this. Many of them are living it. In fact, they have been living it for decades - they just didn't know it. The company responsible didn't tell them, and neither did the Environmental Protection Agency."
- 3. In 2005, the website BestPlaces.net ranked the Anniston and the Gadsden Metros in the bottom 10 ranked metro areas in America to live in. Anniston ranked #323 and Gadsden ranked #324 out of 331 metro areas. The Struggles In Anniston / Gadsden But while Gadsden is growing with a vibrant downtown, more small businesses and occupancy rates, better real estate sales, and a better quality of life. Anniston / Oxford has been slowly going the other way.

The average yearly wage dropped 2.4% The 24/7 Wall St. website said: No metropolitan area suffered a greater decline in average weekly wages as Anniston did in the fourth quarter of 2012. The public sector, which often pays higher wages than the private sector, declined 3% during that time. In addition, the number of jobs in trade, transportation, and utilities declined by 4.2% during the year. Job cuts and wage reductions are likely to continue in the Anniston area in 2013 as the federal sequestration hits the Anniston Army Depot, which makes up a large share of the area’s workforce.

Other East Alabama Problems Talladega / Sylacauga was ranked as the 5th poorest region in America by Yahoo! News and Credit.com Alexander City has lost over 10,000+ jobs with Russell Corporation leaving town. Few jobs have been replaced. Unemployed people from Alexander City appeared on the History Channel show “Bamazon” in 2013.

The area features some people with lots of ego trips, and the "good ole' boy" system is thoroughly entrenched in the area. Viewpoints from people in this area can be narrow and minds tend to stay closed. And yes, when change occurs, it usually happens with a lot of kicking and screaming happening.

Instead of being one of the worst metro areas in America, we should be one of the best!

So far, employment opportunities have not improved and in some areas are getting worse!

So here are the seven goals to improve economic competitiveness and employment in East Alabama. •Align needed skills with jobs •Increase the number of people prepared for high wage, high growth jobs •Provide training and job opportunities to enhance human capital •Support existing businesses and spur local entrepreneurship •Capitalize on existing downtown areas •Assist in the development of physical infrastructure and facilities •Develop and conserve the region’s natural resources by utilizing land use and growth management policies In my opinion, if you want to improve education, health, transportation, housing, and community engagement in East Alabama, you must improve the employment situation. Every city in East Alabama already has the infrastructure ready to recruit industry and other good paying jobs. It’s just something needs to be done to tell the world about East Alabama. Like the city of Anniston, we can not keep planning and planning, we need to take action, and quit holding meetings on what we need to do, let’s go!

From run down homes, overgrown lots, empty buildings, and more, the area needs to clean up run down properties. Anniston / Oxford also has many industrial and house properties available for lease or sale. The area has many properties waiting to be bought and transformed, but with the bad economy, nothing has happened and nothing will happen until the economy improves.

Today, there are many empty buildings and homes and many empty lots along the busy highway, not normal for an average city. US 431 / AL 21 / Quintard Ave. is the main drag through the city of Anniston. Today, you see empty buildings and homes, and plenty of payday loan businesses, not good for a city like Anniston!

Anniston / Oxford Current Problems Quintard Mall used to be the go to shopping place in the area. Today, there are several empty storefronts inside. Downtown Anniston and Downtown Oxford have several empty storefronts and buildings.

Some problems along Quintard Ave. have lasted for years with no resolution! Oxford also has some infrastructure issues. From traffic signal malfunctions, traffic signal mis-timings, and the lack of road paint lines. For example, recently installed traffic light sensors have begun to malfunction again, that is not right!

Oxford has had trouble with the Indian mound, hiding project costs that cost taxpayer money, and sometimes a corrupt government.

Jacksonville Current Problems Jacksonville is currently moving all of their important services like their police, fire, and schools to one small area of town. This is not a good idea! What if a strong tornado came through and destroyed everything? The town would be in trouble and an example of poor city planning!

I have been covering broken infrastructure issues in Anniston / Oxford that have been broken often for years! From traffic signal malfunctions, sinkholes, lack of road paint, broken water lines, and more! Not fixing these issues shows people that we are super lazy, and that isn’t good! 2 Sinkholes in town! Lack of road paint on a busy 5-lane road! Broken traffic light sensors for nearly two years and counting!
- 26. Listen To The Ideas From People! Leaders from cities, the county, the legislature, Congress, chambers, and businesses; needs to listen to the people who are proposing great ideas to turn the Anniston / Oxford area around! Not just ignore them completely! 3
- 27. The Cities Needs To Work Together! Every city in Calhoun County needs to put down the pitchforks and come together for the benefits of the people living in the county! The only way you recruit new jobs / businesses, is to work together! 4
- 28. The Area Needs A Recruiting Campaign! Calhoun County needs a social media, YouTube, website campaign that reaches all across the world! Social media posts, YouTube videos, and a active website with blog can work to recruit people, businesses, and jobs into Calhoun County! But it’s going to take money for this to happen! 5

An opening of a new road does not always mean new jobs follow suit! It takes a lot more than a new road to recruit new jobs into the area!

It’s going to take new people with fresh ideas and thinking to get things moving!
