How To Fix &
Turn Around
The Anniston /
Oxford Area
By: Nathan Young
@nvyoung
The Anniston / Oxford metro area along with Calhoun County has struggled over the
past 20 years. Things got started with the closure of Fort McClellan in the 1990’s.
The Bad News About Anniston/Oxford
Then the CBS program “60 Minutes” named the
Anniston area as the dirtiest city in America thanks to
pollution from Monsanto. The program said about
Anniston. "Imagine a place so saturated with toxic,
cancer-causing chemicals that it's in the dirt people
walk on, the air they breathe - even the blood that
pumps through their veins. The 24,000 people living in
Anniston, Ala., don't have to imagine this. Many of
them are living it. In fact, they have been living it for
decades - they just didn't know it. The company
responsible didn't tell them, and neither did the
Environmental Protection Agency."
In 2005, the website BestPlaces.net ranked the Anniston and the Gadsden Metros
in the bottom 10 ranked metro areas in America to live in. Anniston ranked #323
and Gadsden ranked #324 out of 331 metro areas.
The Struggles In Anniston / Gadsden
But while Gadsden is growing with a vibrant
downtown, more small businesses and
occupancy rates, better real estate sales,
and a better quality of life. Anniston /
Oxford has been slowly going the other way.
In 2008, the organization The Milken Institute ranked the Anniston / Oxford area as
the 34th best performing small metro area in America. In 2013, Anniston / Oxford was
ranked the 178th best performing small metro area in America, out of 179 small metro
areas, the 2nd worst in America!
The Anniston/Oxford Economic Freefall
Recently, Forbes ranked Anniston / Oxford as the 179th small metro area in America for the
best places for businesses and careers. This means Anniston / Oxford is the 6th worst small
metro area in America for business/careers. And for job growth, we’re the 3rd worst!
The Anniston/Oxford Economic Freefall
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
From the website Department of Numbers, the first chart shows the total
employment from the Anniston/Oxford metro.
The Anniston/Oxford Economic Freefall
According to the charts, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007
at 53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS
employment reached a maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872
jobs have been lost in Anniston since then.
The second chart called the CES Employment Change shows job gains and losses in
Anniston / Oxford since 2005, most months have featured job losses!
In March 2014, the Anniston / Oxford
unemployment rate spiked to around
7.8%. In March 2013, it was 6.8%.
The Anniston / Oxford area saw the
highest unemployment spike of any
metro area in America.
The Anniston/Oxford Economic Freefall
In 2012, the website 24/7 Wall St. named
Anniston / Oxford as having the worst wage
drop of any metro area in America. The
average yearly wage dropped 2.4% The
24/7 Wall St. website said:
No metropolitan area suffered a greater decline in average weekly wages as
Anniston did in the fourth quarter of 2012. The public sector, which often
pays higher wages than the private sector, declined 3% during that time. In
addition, the number of jobs in trade, transportation, and utilities declined
by 4.2% during the year. Job cuts and wage reductions are likely to continue
in the Anniston area in 2013 as the federal sequestration hits the Anniston
Army Depot, which makes up a large share of the area’s workforce.
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
From the website HomeVestors,
Anniston / Oxford is one of the worst
places in America to buy or sell a
home. The metro area has been put
into the dangerous category.
The Anniston/Oxford Economic Freefall
Over the past few years, over 2,000
people have moved out of the
Anniston / Oxford area. With all of
these bad statistics, can you see
why people are leaving this area?
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
Gadsden has been ranked as the 4th poorest city in
America from 24/7 Wall St. Rand McNally named Gadsden
as one of the seven worst cities in America in 1989.
Other East Alabama Problems
Talladega / Sylacauga was ranked as the 5th poorest
region in America by Yahoo! News and Credit.com
Alexander City has lost over 10,000+ jobs with Russell
Corporation leaving town. Few jobs have been replaced.
Unemployed people from Alexander City appeared on
the History Channel show “Bamazon” in 2013.
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
The Anniston/Oxford Economic Problems
Many people say the Anniston / Oxford area still has small town politics and it’s pretty
much the same all over the area. The area features some people with lots of ego trips, and
the "good ole' boy" system is thoroughly entrenched in the area. Viewpoints from people in
this area can be narrow and minds tend to stay closed. And yes, when change occurs, it
usually happens with a lot of kicking and screaming happening.
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
The Anniston/Oxford Economic Problems
As you can see from the various Facebook comments, many people are
getting tired of seeing the Anniston / Oxford area struggling, and many
people wants to see change and the area get better!
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
The Anniston/Oxford Area Could Be Better
Anniston / Oxford is along Interstate 20, a major traffic corridor between
Birmingham and Atlanta, two well performing metro areas! Instead of being
one of the worst metro areas in America, we should be one of the best!
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
Where’s The Clear Plan 2030 Results?
The East Alabama Regional
Planning and Development
Commission did the Clear Plan
2030 in 2012-2013. So far,
nothing has happened from
the results.
No surprise, education and employment opportunities are the two top
things people from East Alabama want improved! So far, employment
opportunities have not improved and in some areas are getting worse!
So here are the seven goals to improve economic competitiveness and
employment in East Alabama.
•Align needed skills with jobs
•Increase the number of people prepared for high wage, high growth jobs
•Provide training and job opportunities to enhance human capital
•Support existing businesses and spur local entrepreneurship
•Capitalize on existing downtown areas
•Assist in the development of physical infrastructure and facilities
•Develop and conserve the region’s natural resources by utilizing land use
and growth management policies
In my opinion, if you want to improve
education, health, transportation,
housing, and community engagement in
East Alabama, you must improve the
employment situation. Every city in
East Alabama already has the
infrastructure ready to recruit industry
and other good paying jobs. It’s just
something needs to be done to tell the
world about East Alabama.
Like the city of Anniston, we can not
keep planning and planning, we need to
take action, and quit holding meetings
on what we need to do, let’s go!
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
Anniston / Oxford Current Problems
Anniston / Oxford has many properties that have been abandoned
for years. From run down homes, overgrown lots, empty buildings,
and more, the area needs to clean up run down properties.
Anniston / Oxford also has many industrial and house properties
available for lease or sale. The area has many properties waiting to
be bought and transformed, but with the bad economy, nothing has
happened and nothing will happen until the economy improves.
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
Anniston / Oxford Current Problems
US 78 / Hamric Dr. is the main drag through the city of Oxford.
Today, there are many empty buildings and homes and many
empty lots along the busy highway, not normal for an average city.
US 431 / AL 21 / Quintard Ave. is the main drag
through the city of Anniston. Today, you see empty
buildings and homes, and plenty of payday loan
businesses, not good for a city like Anniston!
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
Anniston / Oxford Current Problems
Quintard Mall used to be the go to shopping place in the
area. Today, there are several empty storefronts inside.
Downtown Anniston and Downtown Oxford have
several empty storefronts and buildings.
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
Anniston / Oxford Current Problems
Anniston has major infrastructure issues from signal malfunctions,
burnt out signals, and crooked road paint lines. Some problems
along Quintard Ave. have lasted for years with no resolution!
Oxford also has some infrastructure issues. From traffic signal
malfunctions, traffic signal mis-timings, and the lack of road paint
lines. For example, recently installed traffic light sensors have
begun to malfunction again, that is not right!
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
Anniston / Oxford Current Problems
Anniston has trouble with people in poverty, wild dogs
running around town, and sometimes a corrupt government.
Oxford has had trouble with the Indian mound, hiding project costs
that cost taxpayer money, and sometimes a corrupt government.
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
Jacksonville Current Problems
Jacksonville is currently moving all of their
important services like their police, fire,
and schools to one small area of town.
This is not a good idea! What if a strong
tornado came through and destroyed
everything? The town would be in trouble
and an example of poor city planning!
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
As You Can See, I Recommend This!
I have told people NOT to open a small business in Anniston / Oxford as
their chances for survival are very slim! I have also told people who are
unemployed to move away from this area to find work!
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
So, What Are Some Solutions To Fix This Problem?
I have ideas, if leaders
would listen to me!
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
Anniston / Oxford needs new political leaders! This area needs to end it’s
small town politics and “Good Ole’ Boy” system and elect people who will
move this area forward without having a narrow mind and viewpoints.
We Need New Political Leaders!

According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
Fix Our Current Infrastructure!
I have been covering broken infrastructure issues in Anniston / Oxford
that have been broken often for years! From traffic signal malfunctions,
sinkholes, lack of road paint, broken water lines, and more! Not fixing
these issues shows people that we are super lazy, and that isn’t good!
2
Sinkholes in town!
Lack of road paint on a busy 5-lane road!
Broken traffic light
sensors for nearly two
years and counting!
Listen To The Ideas From People!
Leaders from cities, the county, the legislature, Congress, chambers, and
businesses; needs to listen to the people who are proposing great ideas to
turn the Anniston / Oxford area around! Not just ignore them completely!
3
The Cities Needs To Work Together!
Every city in Calhoun County needs to put down the pitchforks and come
together for the benefits of the people living in the county! The only way
you recruit new jobs / businesses, is to work together!
4
The Area Needs A Recruiting Campaign!
Calhoun County needs a social media, YouTube, website campaign that
reaches all across the world! Social media posts, YouTube videos, and a
active website with blog can work to recruit people, businesses, and jobs
into Calhoun County! But it’s going to take money for this to happen!

According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
The Eastern Parkway Does Not Mean Jobs!
An opening of a new road does not always mean new jobs follow suit!
It takes a lot more than a new road to recruit new jobs into the area!
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
Yes, The Opening Of Sam’s Club Is Good!
But Anniston / Oxford needs over 50 Sam’s Clubs in the terms of the
amount of jobs to recover all of the lost jobs in this metro area.
One Sam’s Club = 150-200 Jobs
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
Eco-Tourism Is Not Going To Save This Area!
Anniston / Oxford is trying to go the eco-tourism route. While a good
idea, it’s not going to bring much needed jobs to people who need them!
According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at
53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a
maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston
since then.
A Beautiful Area Does Not Mean A Good Economy
Just like the beautiful scenery in Eastern Kentucky, Anniston / Oxford can
not rely on beautiful scenery and tourism to run the local economy. It’s
going to take new people with fresh ideas and thinking to get things moving!
The bottomline is I have a huge following on Geek Alabama and my social
media sites. Everytime I show something wrong in this area, it forms the
impression to people and jobs to not come here! If leaders want this area
to change, get things fixed, and listen to me and other people! That’s it!
In Closing
They don’t move this
slow up North in Ohio!

  • 1. How To Fix & Turn Around The Anniston / Oxford Area By: Nathan Young @nvyoung

The Bad News About Anniston/Oxford Then the CBS program “60 Minutes” named the Anniston area as the dirtiest city in America thanks to pollution from Monsanto. The program said about Anniston. "Imagine a place so saturated with toxic, cancer-causing chemicals that it's in the dirt people walk on, the air they breathe - even the blood that pumps through their veins. The 24,000 people living in Anniston, Ala., don't have to imagine this. Many of them are living it. In fact, they have been living it for decades - they just didn't know it. The company responsible didn't tell them, and neither did the Environmental Protection Agency."

The Anniston/Oxford Economic Problems Many people say the Anniston / Oxford area still has small town politics and it’s pretty much the same all over the area. The area features some people with lots of ego trips, and the "good ole' boy" system is thoroughly entrenched in the area. Viewpoints from people in this area can be narrow and minds tend to stay closed. And yes, when change occurs, it usually happens with a lot of kicking and screaming happening.

  • 15. According to the chart, CES employment for Anniston peaked in March 2007 at 53,700. Since then 8,600 jobs have been lost in Anniston. CPS employment reached a maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston since then. Where’s The Clear Plan 2030 Results? So here are the seven goals to improve economic competitiveness and employment in East Alabama. •Align needed skills with jobs •Increase the number of people prepared for high wage, high growth jobs •Provide training and job opportunities to enhance human capital •Support existing businesses and spur local entrepreneurship •Capitalize on existing downtown areas •Assist in the development of physical infrastructure and facilities •Develop and conserve the region’s natural resources by utilizing land use and growth management policies In my opinion, if you want to improve education, health, transportation, housing, and community engagement in East Alabama, you must improve the employment situation. Every city in East Alabama already has the infrastructure ready to recruit industry and other good paying jobs. It’s just something needs to be done to tell the world about East Alabama. Like the city of Anniston, we can not keep planning and planning, we need to take action, and quit holding meetings on what we need to do, let’s go!
  • 16. Anniston / Oxford Current Problems Anniston / Oxford has many properties that have been abandoned for years. From run down homes, overgrown lots, empty buildings, and more, the area needs to clean up run down properties. Anniston / Oxford also has many industrial and house properties available for lease or sale. The area has many properties waiting to be bought and transformed, but with the bad economy, nothing has happened and nothing will happen until the economy improves.

CPS employment reached a maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston since then. Anniston / Oxford Current Problems US 78 / Hamric Dr. is the main drag through the city of Oxford. Today, there are many empty buildings and homes and many empty lots along the busy highway, not normal for an average city. US 431 / AL 21 / Quintard Ave. is the main drag through the city of Anniston. Today, you see empty buildings and homes, and plenty of payday loan businesses, not good for a city like Anniston!

Some problems along Quintard Ave. have lasted for years with no resolution! Oxford also has some infrastructure issues. From traffic signal malfunctions, traffic signal mis-timings, and the lack of road paint lines. For example, recently installed traffic light sensors have begun to malfunction again, that is not right!
  • 20. Anniston / Oxford Current Problems Anniston has trouble with people in poverty, wild dogs running around town, and sometimes a corrupt government. Oxford has had trouble with the Indian mound, hiding project costs that cost taxpayer money, and sometimes a corrupt government.

CPS employment reached a maximum of 53,442 for Anniston in March 2007. 7,872 jobs have been lost in Anniston since then. Jacksonville Current Problems Jacksonville is currently moving all of their important services like their police, fire, and schools to one small area of town. This is not a good idea! What if a strong tornado came through and destroyed everything? The town would be in trouble and an example of poor city planning!
  • 22. As You Can See, I Recommend This! I have told people NOT to open a small business in Anniston / Oxford as their chances for survival are very slim! I have also told people who are unemployed to move away from this area to find work!
  • 23. So, What Are Some Solutions To Fix This Problem? I have ideas, if leaders would listen to me!
  • 24. Anniston / Oxford needs new political leaders! This area needs to end it’s small town politics and “Good Ole’ Boy” system and elect people who will move this area forward without having a narrow mind and viewpoints. We Need New Political Leaders! Rep. Del MarshMayor Leon SmithRep. Mike Rogers 1
  • 25. Fix Our Current Infrastructure! I have been covering broken infrastructure issues in Anniston / Oxford that have been broken often for years! From traffic signal malfunctions, sinkholes, lack of road paint, broken water lines, and more! Not fixing these issues shows people that we are super lazy, and that isn’t good! 2 Sinkholes in town! Lack of road paint on a busy 5-lane road! Broken traffic light sensors for nearly two years and counting!
  • 26. Listen To The Ideas From People! Leaders from cities, the county, the legislature, Congress, chambers, and businesses; needs to listen to the people who are proposing great ideas to turn the Anniston / Oxford area around! Not just ignore them completely! 3
  • 27. The Cities Needs To Work Together! Every city in Calhoun County needs to put down the pitchforks and come together for the benefits of the people living in the county! The only way you recruit new jobs / businesses, is to work together! 4
  • 28. The Area Needs A Recruiting Campaign! Calhoun County needs a social media, YouTube, website campaign that reaches all across the world! Social media posts, YouTube videos, and a active website with blog can work to recruit people, businesses, and jobs into Calhoun County! But it’s going to take money for this to happen! 5
  • 29. The Eastern Parkway Does Not Mean Jobs! An opening of a new road does not always mean new jobs follow suit! It takes a lot more than a new road to recruit new jobs into the area!
  • 30. Yes, The Opening Of Sam’s Club Is Good! But Anniston / Oxford needs over 50 Sam’s Clubs in the terms of the amount of jobs to recover all of the lost jobs in this metro area. One Sam’s Club = 150-200 Jobs
  • 31. Eco-Tourism Is Not Going To Save This Area! Anniston / Oxford is trying to go the eco-tourism route. While a good idea, it’s not going to bring much needed jobs to people who need them!
  • 32. A Beautiful Area Does Not Mean A Good Economy Just like the beautiful scenery in Eastern Kentucky, Anniston / Oxford can not rely on beautiful scenery and tourism to run the local economy. It’s going to take new people with fresh ideas and thinking to get things moving!
  • 33. The bottomline is I have a huge following on Geek Alabama and my social media sites. Everytime I show something wrong in this area, it forms the impression to people and jobs to not come here! If leaders want this area to change, get things fixed, and listen to me and other people! That’s it! In Closing They don’t move this slow up North in Ohio!
