CFOs organization's collaboration they enjoy
The animated and participative discussion brought out some interesting aspects about
the CIO-CFO relationship and the CIO's role in an organizations, like:
• What matters more than the nos. (ROI etc.) is the business strategy, the long-term
vision of the company, what is the business value that IT can offer, etc
• CIO has to work with the business heads to deliver value to them, so whether CIO
reports to CFO or CEO does not really matter
• IT can create disruptive business models to directly impact the top-line, or help invent
new markets or business models, and so IT should be viewed as a strategic function
• The discussion on technology should be about competitive advantage (more so
today), and not so much about TCO, ROI etc.
• CIOs should be measured not just on how much cost savings they can bring in year
on year in the maintenance cost, but also on the new technologies, initiatives &
innovations brought in by them
Mr. Gupta summed up the discussion with the observation that all the business functions
would need technology to excel and should collaborate in jointly defining the business
value of IT to the organization.
14. Mr. LN Sundarrajan advocated a pragmatic
approach for leveraging IT to deliver value by
involving the business/functional leaders as
stakeholders.

forcing even huge monolithic systems to be
ready for being available on the web, and how
new paradigms like mobility are changing the
way transactions are done and impacting

17. 1st Panel Discussion: Is the role of CFO now more critical in
shaping the organization's collaboration strategy?”
The panel discussion threw some thought-provoking points like:
• With proprietary software, cost goes up and innovation comes down, with open
source it is the reverse
• Change is coming to an industry from a seemingly unrelated source, through
innovations in some other industries or fields
• Openness and interoperability are key to success of the collaboration
infrastructure
• While it will take time for enterprises to adopt open source Business software as
these are currently available mostly in proprietary format, it is easier to adopt
open source collaboration software as these are fairly mature and stable
19. In his Concluding Address, Mr. Arun Gupta
observed how the culture of innovation, making
things work, and dealing with adverse situations
make India what it is.
He shared how the risk-averse nature of Indian
companies and CIOs prevents moving business
critical applications onto open source platform.
He said when the Indian business overcomes
this, there'll be a big leap forward for IT in India.
He ended by posing a question to the audience:
“How does an organization prepare for the next
