Free books matter a lot. In the beginning, everything I wrote was intended for free. I had noticed that so many English language teachers here in my home country had to struggle to pay when they attended a professional conference or wanted to buy a book for their professional development.
My writing was a way for me to make a contribution to fill the need I had observed. It gradually dawned upon me that the only way I would ever have a legitimate way to alleviate the affordability gap was a paradox. Let me explain the paradox.
Again and again, I have observed human behavior as being counter-intuitive, a paradox. When something is free, it is not valued as much as something that you have to stuggle to obtain. It does not matter if your struggle is in terms of economic resources, or in terms of personal effort.
Put another way, when human beings get something without making an effort, as in cheap or free, it evokes no sense of importance within us.

Mother Tongue
The Mother Tongue in the Chilean EFL Classroom:
How We Learn English [Kindle Edition]

Book Description
Publication Date: September 21, 2012
The Mother Tongue Taboo (speak only
English in the classroom) addresses all the
“Taboo Topics”: Monolingual Fallacy, Native
Speaker Fallacy, Early Start Fallacy, and More
is Better Fallacy.
This book transparently shows 2 countries,
one successful, one with marginal results at
best, where Linguistic Imperialism, ie. the
Four Fallacy Thinking…is not a Fallacy, but
Reality, or Evidence-Based Results. In other
words, it’s not ideology, not philosophy, but
6

responds to the real world rather than an
imagined world.
When you read this book, do so with an open
mind. Above all, prepare to have your thinking
challenged.
If you teach English, or if you have children, if
you don’t trust ideology and instead prefer
factual evidence, this book is a must have, it is
for you, it is for those like you…
“The Mother Tongue in the Chilean EFL
Classroom” is told from my point of view. Yet,
7
16. Thomas Jerome Baker
in a larger sense, it’s an ELT story that makes
the effort to share, a moment in time, with
some very special people, in a very special
country – Chile, a place time forgot, a place
where we do things the Chilean Way.
Don’t bother looking for it on the map. Be
content to know it is located at the end of the
world, literally.

One of the most defining characteristics of an
EFL classroom in Chile is the quality of the
teacher. If the teacher teaches English in
English, they display what the quality of their
beliefs are, namely, “in this classroom there is
no place for the mother tongue.”
If the teacher teaches English in Spanish,
maybe they read my book, but weren’t
impressed. The teacher’s beliefs are also on
display, namely, “there is a place for the
mother tongue in this classroom.”
Who is right? Who is wrong? At any rate, the
language that the teacher teaches in, is crucial.
It will ultimately define the students’
achievements.
9
18. Thomas Jerome Baker
As you read the book, stay with me. I have not
chosen the direct path, because, if you do not
have the background on what it is like to use
language as an instrument of national
policymaking, then you will end up with a
misinterpretation of a simple question: Should
the mother tongue be used in the Chilean EFL
classroom?
After reading this book, you will understand
why the Chilean teacher teaches as s/he does,
and be in a good position to reexamine your
own practice…

How to Coach A Debate Team [Kindle Edition]
This book contains all you need to know to
successfully coach a debate team. You may
need to convince students that debate is a
good idea, though. Here are six reasons:
1. Debating ability is a valuable skill.
2. Debate utilizes useful English.
23
32. Thomas Jerome Baker
3. It is a unique way to teach grammar.
4. It develops critical thinking skills.
5. It introduces global issues.
6. It develops research skills.
A more powerful reason to coach a debate
team is given to us by Dr. Martin Luther
King: ““Sooner or later all the people of the
world will have to discover a way to live
together in peace… If this is to be achieved,
man must evolve for all human conflict a
method which rejects revenge, aggression,
and retaliation…” Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

The International Baccalaureate [Paperback]
The global search for high-quality education,

It is my hope that the present day search for

equality of opportunity for all, shall not cease
until the “gold” we seek, has been found.

In this endeavour, it is my belief that

42. CHAPTER 3
WHY “FREE” MATTERS:
SHARING & CARING
Free books matter a lot. In the beginning,
everything I wrote was intended for free. I had
noticed that so many English language teachers here
in my home country had to struggle to pay when they
attended a professional conference or wanted to buy a
book for their professional development.
My writing was a way for me to make a
contribution to fill the need I had observed. It
gradually dawned upon me that the only way I would
ever have a legitimate way to alleviate the
affordability gap was a paradox. Let me explain the
paradox.
Again and again, I have observed human behavior as
being counter-intuitive, a paradox. When something
is free, it is not valued as much as something that you
have to stuggle to obtain. It does not matter if your
struggle is in terms of economic resources, or in
terms of personal effort.
Put another way, when human beings get something
without making an effort, as in cheap or free, it
evokes no sense of importance within us.
34
43. FOUR FANTASTIC FREE BOOKS 4 U!
I have seen this paradox at work in classrooms, by
students who value a low, barely passing mark with a
rigorous demanding teacher over a perfect mark with
a teacher who is less demanding. Another example
would be attending a conference or event for free
versus paying a fee.
As incredibly unbelievable as it may sound, we
humans, the world over, value effort and hard work,
to the point of personal sacrifice, in our lives. It
follows then, that when you give someone a free
entrance to a conference, or some other event, it is
quite likely that a huge number of absences will
occur.
It is not hard to understand why. After all, we
have lost nothing. We paid nothing, we lose nothing.
Nothing from nothing leaves nothing. This
calculation is universally true when it comes to
human behaviour.
However, I am not pessimistic. There are people
like me. If you give me a free ticket, I will go to the
concert, to the conference, to the show. After all, it is
good, it cost me nothing.
Likewise, if you give me a free book, I will accept
it with a smile and a “Thank You kindly”! Then I’ll
read your book, and if it is good, I’ll tell someone else
about it. If it made me smile, if it made me cry, if it
touched me in some kind of emotional way, I’ll tell
the world about you and your book.
35
44. Thomas Jerome Baker
I’ll even go out of my way to ensure that the
people in my world knows about you, who you are,
and what you did.
I’m talking about the important people in my life,
my family, my relatives, my friends, my co-workers,
my colleagues, the mailman, the milkman, the taxi-
driver, the whole world I come into contact with, I
want to make sure that I share with someone else.
Finally, dear reader, that’s what I’m doing right
now. I’m sharing with you, for free. You pay $0.00
cents.
I’m sharing four books that I wrote, each of which
I know is a great book, with an important message for
the person who reads the books.
For example, Boudica is a strong woman who has
to make some difficult decisions. You may agree or
disagree with Boudicca, but one thing is sure: reading
Boudicca: Her Story will make you more aware of
your own humanity, and consequently, how fragile
we are as individuals, and as a society.
Meet Me in Memphis is a love story. Love stories
are all around us, every day, every where we look, we
see two humans with a profound emotional bond
with one another. At this moment, if you could see
me, you would see me smiling, because I’m in love.
I’m thinking about the woman I love, my Gaby. I fell
in love with her the first moment I saw her.
Incredibly enough, she fell in love with me the first
time she saw me. It was only later that she found out
I wasn’t such an easy person to get along with. She
36
45. FOUR FANTASTIC FREE BOOKS 4 U!
has managed to make me a better person than I ever
would have become without her.
What’s the message? Here it is: When a person
writes a love story, the writer must be in love.
It is the only requirement for the love story, that it
be real, and thus able to impact you, the reader in a
profound, emotional way. Meet Me in Memphis is
real...
Time to Teach Teens is equally real. You take a
teacher, me, and you spend time with me as I share
with you a very special summer spent working with a
group of teens. I share my thoughts, my tips, my ways
of working with teens.
The reality of looking at my work, from a
reflective point of view, is that you come away with a
point of comparison, if you are a practicing teacher,
between yourself and me. You compare how we teach,
literally.
If you are a young teacher, you get some ideas that
you might want to try, or to avoid. You will develop
your own style, based on your own experiences, but
here is as good as any place to start from: the
experience of reality.
Finally, Teaching Academic Writing is exactly
what it says. You get essays about aspects of teaching
academic writing, taken from a year in which I taught
Academic Writing to English pedagogy students at
Universidad Andrés Bello in Santiago.
As you read, you have access to actual practice.
You get a chance to understand one way of helping
students to become better writers. You will find that I
37
46. Thomas Jerome Baker
am a great fan of process over product. You will meet
Dr. Peter Elbow, a man who discovered that he had
graduated from university, but had not learned to
write. You will meet genre, you will meet controversy,
and in the end, you will have a more informed base
for your own practice, and for your own writing.
Finally, I’m sharing with you because I know
there are people who will take advantage of this
unique opportunity. For others, who won’t or can’t
take advantage of something that is free, we will
accept, quite simply, that life is like that.
I hope you enjoy all four books. A part of me is
within the pages of all four books, waiting for you to
discover. A smile is inside each book for you. An
aspiration, a hope, a dream is inside each book,
waiting for you to find it.
And when you find it, that part which moves you,
that which touches you emotionally, then please
share with someone else. If you will do that, then
FREE is a good word, and FREE matters.
And if you find nothing inside the pages of these
four books, then of course, you have nothing to share,
and I accept the blame for my failure, for your loss of
time. If such is the case, I humbly beg your
forgiveness, in advance. Still, I hope you enjoy your
books, for I have written them for you, dear reader.
