Altibase helped BISTel (leading semiconductor chip manufacturer that specializes in equipment engineering system solutions) to produce precise products, increase quality and yield, while decreasing scrap.
ALTIBASE® HDB™ is the only Hybrid Database Management Systems (DBMS) in the industry that combines an in-memory DBMS with an on-disk DBMS, with a single uniform interface, enabling real-time access to large volumes of data, while simplifying and revolutionizing data processing.
Altibase is provider of In-Memory data solutions for real-time access, analysis and distribution of high volumes of data in mission-critical environments.

CASE STUDY FOR MANUFACTURING
3. + Overview
Altibase
Altibase is provider of In-Memory
database solutions for real-time
access, analysis and distribution of
high volumes of data in mission-
critical environments.
BISTel
BISTel is South Korea’s leading
semiconductor chip manufacturer
that specializes in equipment
engineering system (ESS) solutions.
Summary
Altibase helped BISTel to produce precise products, increase quality and
yield, while decreasing scrap.
In-Memory Database Solution
4. + Problems
BISTel suffered from inadequate quality control. The core issue was
the inability to track defects and change requirements in real-time.
Data was stored on multiple database management systems
(DBMS), which perpetuated BISTel’s incapacity to monitor and
react to these issues. With latency issues, the automated system
could not pinpoint the imperfections1.
Numerous workstations relying on multiple databases led to substantial
performance degradation, triggering uncontainable defects.
Vital quality protocols were breached due to delay in processing product
composition data.
The increase of customer demand caused further erosion in quality
control, prompting unmanageable blows to profitability and reputation.
In-Memory Database Solution
1) The ability to detect even the slightest flaw in the assembly
line is vital to the quality control process.
5. + Solution
BISTel implemented ALTIBASE’s HDB in-memory DBMS in 20061.
ALTIBASE HDB captured defective data in real-time and alerted
BISTel’s quality control personnel to take immediate action at
the time of occurrence2. The deployment took only three
months, two months for application development and one
month for performance tuning3.
In-Memory Database Solution
1) BISTel deployed the ALTIBASE HDB hybrid technology (in-memory and
on-disk) on an 8-core HP Superdome Serve in a stand-alone
configuration.
2) BISTel’s quality control personnel received defective data in real-time on
a micro-level per product.
3) Prior to implementing ALTIBASE’s HDB, BISTel’s legacy system’s
processing speed was about 80ms per transaction. With ALTIBASE
HDB, BISTel was able to lower their transaction speeds to 3ms per
transaction, achieving a performance boost of ~2700%.
6. + Results
Precise product manufacturing processes increased quality and
yield, while decreasing scrap.
BISTel’s revenue, profit and reputation are backed by their
superior products.
Customer satisfaction, loyalty, and attraction are maximized.
ALTIBASE HDB enabled BISTel to increase productivity by 27-fold.

7. + Technical Details
BISTel achieved outstanding results with its Equipment Engineering System
(EES) Framework by leveraging the key features of ALTIBASE HDB, specifically
in the areas of high-performance, application development and data
integration.

8. +
BISTel’s Equipment Engineering Systems (EES) are commonly used in
semiconductor and flat panel display manufacturing. EES gathers data for
semiconductor manufacturing equipment and analyses it according to production
plans, scheduling, operation status, and other dimensions. The role of BISTel’s EES
framework is to feed data to the EES.
BISTel needed to speed up the manufacturing process to improve product
quality, and reduce error rates.
BISTel’s technical objective was to manage the increasing amount of data to
control semiconductor manufacturing equipment, provide real-time monitoring
and analysis, and to seamlessly link the Equipment Engineering data with the EE
application.
In the core of the EES framework there was a conventional on-disk RDBMS for
data management. However, the on-disk DBMS did not have the capacity to
process large volumes of data in real-time. This was the main requirement for the
EES framework allowing for increased speed in the overall manufacturing process.

Performance
9. +
BISTel decided to design a system using ALTIBASE HDB in the In-Memory only
mode as the front to the on-disk Oracle DBMS. In this architecture, ALTIBASE
HDB was used for the processing and analysis of large volumes of data at
extreme speeds whereas the on-disk Oracle DBMS was used for managing
historical data that did not require real-time processing power.
BISTel also implemented an In-house Data Integration (IDI) tool to synchronize
data between ALTIBASE HDB In-Memory DBMS and Oracle on-disk DBMS.
ALTIBASE HDB’s real-time performance remained constant even when its
workload also required data synchronization tasks to another database.
ALTIBASE HDB as a full-featured and standards-compliant DBMS also made it
easy for BISTel to implement this new system by allowing BISTel application
developers to work with industry standard connectivity interfaces and familiar
programming languages. Using JDBC, Java and standard SQL, BISTel
application developers implemented and deployed the EES Framework within
2 months.
