This presentation summarizes the OldWeather citizen science project, which aims to transcribe weather observations from historical ship logbooks in order to reconstruct past climate conditions. Volunteers transcribe pages from over 250,000 digitized logbooks, recording details like location, temperature, wind, and notes. Over half a million pages have been transcribed so far, providing climate data for visualization and analysis. The project emphasizes community and gamification aspects to motivate participation, with volunteers earning ranks like "captain" for their contributions. Transcriptions are found to be over 97% accurate on validation.
