2. I’d like to start by just taking a moment to introduce myself. As Tatiana said, my name is Martha Burtis. This is my email and Twitter id. I work at the University of Mary Washington, in this building, duPont Hall. I work for the division of teaching and learning technologies, and this is the address where we can be found online. And, finally, I am a blogger and this is my blog, the Fish Wrapper where I write about teaching, technology, and anything else I feel like. It’s because of where I work and what I do that I’m here to talk to you about blogging -- a topic that’s gotten lots of attention over the years in education but that I still think there’s a lot to say about and learn about. \n

6. My school, Mary Washington, has been engaging in large-scale blogging for about four 1/2 years. We have literally thousands of students and faculty using our blogging platform and millions of people viewing the work of these individuals every year. I won’t lie: I think what’s going on in UMW Blogs is pretty impressive and we’re very proud of it. But I want to make sure you all understand that we didn’t get to where we are overnight. There was a bit of a journey involved, and I want to briefly tell you a little about it. \n
7. Seven 1/2 years ago, I came to work for the Division of Teaching and Learning Technologies at UMW which was, at that time, under the leadership of Dr. Gardner Campbell. Gardner has been directing the division for several years and he and many of the members of the staff of DTLT were frustrated by the limitations of the technology available to them on campus: this wasn’t unusual. I think lots of us have been frustrated at different times of the systems that are sold to us at Universities in the name of “learning” and “teaching management.” It seemed to Gardner that there were tremendous things HAPPENING on the web, a wave of possibilities were emerging and it seemed like we in education should be a part of those happenings. The summer of 2004, events conspired to convince Gardner that each of us in DTLT should have our own piece of the Web -- a place to create, share, and explore possibilities: a virtual sandbox. To that end, he arranged for the University to purchase commodity Web hosting for each of us at the shocking cost of $7.95/month. Our first host was Bloghosts, and upon logging into the control panel of our new spaces for the first time, we were presented with lots of options, including this icon: Fantastico. Fantastico is just a script installer, which basically means it made it possible for us, with a few clicks, to install a number of free, open source Web applications. There was wiki software, bulletin board applications, generic content management systems, and blogging applications. In particular, there was this application: Wordpress, an open source blogging platform. And, one by one, we each built our own blog. This was my blog way back on August 24, 2004. My very first post. \n
