INTRO
There continues to be great confusion about the relationship between the title of Product Manager and the role of
Product Owner. John's experience across three distinct scrum projects in two organizations has led him to some
clarifying thoughts on agile's implementation by product managers.

QUESTIONS

Q1 Is it easier to involve customers during construction of custom software products than it is for B2B or
Enterprise products?

Q2 Which role is most suited to getting customer input on a sprint-by-sprint basis: product owner, user
experience, or product manager?

Q3 What are the benefits and risks of letting customers see unfinished work vs. using vaporware to gather
current-state feedback?

Q4 How can product managers balance ambiguity of frequent customer input with stable product vision and
meeting tight deadlines?

deeply #prodmgmttalk -4:13 PM Sep 19th, 2011

AND the market? #prodmgmttalk -4:15 PM Sep 19th, 2011

jbrett @gander2112 #prodmgmttalk I'm not sure its a question of skills as much as one of capacity. Thoughts? -4:15
PM Sep 19th, 2011

johnpeltier I've done both at once. The challenge is keeping a PM / PO on one product. #prodmgmttalk -4:16 PM Sep
19th, 2011

saeedwkhan @jbrett is correct.... but it's a question of skills, capacity & overall scalability. That's why roles need to be
separate. #prodmgmttalk -4:16 PM Sep 19th, 2011

gander2112 Actually, If the product owner role is pigeonholed into a dev interface role only, they will never learn mkt
and other skills #prodmgmttalk -4:17 PM Sep 19th, 2011

jbrett @saeedwkhan #prodmgmttalk but isn't that the function of the PO? To sit with the team as a customer proxy? -

Sept 19: Managing the Backlog During Initial Development in B2B ISVs w/ John Peltier

  • 1. Transcript from Sept 19, 2011: Managing Backlog During Initial Development in B2B ISVs Global Product Management Talk w/ John Peltier, Agile Product Manager Subscribe: http://bit.ly/ouZN8J FB: http://on.fb.me/ncKUD8 Site: http://bit.ly/dESAcb Listen to speaker & co-hosts! http://www.blogtalkradio.com/prodmgmttalk Listen to today’s podcast: http://bit.ly/oCT0LD INTRO There continues to be great confusion about the relationship between the title of Product Manager and the role of Product Owner. John's experience across three distinct scrum projects in two organizations has led him to some clarifying thoughts on agile's implementation by product managers. QUESTIONS Q1 Is it easier to involve customers during construction of custom software products than it is for B2B or Enterprise products? Q2 Which role is most suited to getting customer input on a sprint-by-sprint basis: product owner, user experience, or product manager? Q3 What are the benefits and risks of letting customers see unfinished work vs. using vaporware to gather current-state feedback? Q4 How can product managers balance ambiguity of frequent customer input with stable product vision and meeting tight deadlines? cindyfsolomon Welcome! @gander2112 Discussion questions from each talk http://t.co/AJlZtCOh Today’s questions:http://t.co/lra5ixAK #prodmgmttalk -3:58 PM Sep 19th, 2011 cindyfsolomon Please introduce yourself: where you're tweeting from, your involvement w/product management when you come in!#prodmgmttalk -3:58 PM Sep 19th, 2011 cindyfsolomon This is Cindy, co-host,from across bay from San Francisco. How to do while in the dev room? #prodmgmttalk -4:06 PM Sep 19th, 2011 rcauvin Now we have B2B and B2C software product teams doing #agile & experiencing challenges representing the customer effectively. #prodmgmttalk -4:06 PM Sep 19th, 2011 cindyfsolomon Today's questions are at the bottom of http://t.co/u4gQdgBh @rcauvin & @johnpeltier giving audio context for backlog #prodmgmttalk -4:07 PM Sep 19th, 2011 gander2112 Listening in. #prodmgmttalk -4:08 PM Sep 19th, 2011 johnpeltier If the product management and product owner roles are split, will the same product quality result? #prodmgmttalk -4:08 PM Sep 19th, 2011 rcauvin And if the #prodmgmt & product owner roles are NOT split, will product quality suffer? #prodmgmttalk #agile #scrum -4:09 PM Sep 19th, 2011 gander2112 I think that it might be part of the level of skills in the product owner role, at my company, the PO is a very junior role#prodmgmttalk -4:10 PM Sep 19th, 2011 _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Sponsor us http://bit.ly/gF0Tt3 and visit our sponsor below! 2 BlogTalkRadio http://bit.ly/phTOWh

Mgr (role), Prod Owner (role) & #prodmgmt function & goals. Then it's not an issue. :-) #prodmgmttalk -4:12 PM Sep 19th, 2011 ProdMgmtTalk Q1 Is it easier to involve customers during construction of custom software products than it is for B2B or Enterprise prodcts? #prodmgmttalk -4:12 PM Sep 19th, 2011 gander2112 A1: Naturally. You are building it for one customer, so that makes it easier to involve them deeply #prodmgmttalk -4:13 PM Sep 19th, 2011 johnpeltier @saeedwkhan Well, that *sounds* easy!#prodmgmttalk -4:13 PM Sep 19th, 2011 ProdMgmtTalk Welcome @saeedwkhan ! RT "Need to distinguish between Prod. Mgr (role), Prod Owner (role) & #prodmgmt function & goals." #prodmgmttalk -4:13 PM Sep 19th, 2011 jbrett #prodmgmttalk Is it even practical for a PO to effectively serve the needs of the team AND the market on their own? -4:13 PM Sep 19th, 2011 rcauvin Welcome, @saeedwkhan. Looking forward to more of your thoughts on the #prodmgmt vs. product owners roles.#prodmgmttalk #agile #scrum -4:13 PM Sep 19th, 2011 gander2112 @saeedwkhan Agreed, but often not done.#prodmgmttalk -4:13 PM Sep 19th, 2011 ProdMgmtTalk Welcome! RT @jbrett: #prodmgmttalk Is it even practical for PO to effectively serve needs of team AND market on their own? #prodmgmttalk -4:14 PM Sep 19th, 2011 gander2112 Yes, if they have enuf skills RT @jbrett: Is it even practical for a PO to effectively serve the needs of team AND the market? #prodmgmttalk -4:15 PM Sep 19th, 2011 jbrett @gander2112 #prodmgmttalk I'm not sure its a question of skills as much as one of capacity. Thoughts? -4:15 PM Sep 19th, 2011 johnpeltier I've done both at once. The challenge is keeping a PM / PO on one product. #prodmgmttalk -4:16 PM Sep 19th, 2011 saeedwkhan @jbrett is correct.... but it's a question of skills, capacity & overall scalability. That's why roles need to be separate. #prodmgmttalk -4:16 PM Sep 19th, 2011 gander2112 Actually, If the product owner role is pigeonholed into a dev interface role only, they will never learn mkt and other skills #prodmgmttalk -4:17 PM Sep 19th, 2011 _______________________________________________________________________________________________ Sponsor us http://bit.ly/gF0Tt3 and visit our sponsor below! 3 BlogTalkRadio http://bit.ly/phTOWh

Separating roles seems to be yielding dividends. #prodmgmttalk -4:18 PM Sep 19th, 2011 saeedwkhan #prodmgmttalk PO should be part of the #prodmgmt team, but with a focus on working with Eng. They don't need to live there though! -4:18 PM Sep 19th, 2011 ProdMgmtTalk Challenge to participants: CALL-IN (323) 927-2957to join @johnpeltier @rcauvin & @cindyfsolomon in live audio discussion #prodmgmttalk -4:18 PM Sep 19th, 2011 johnpeltier Isn't backlog management intended to meet market needs? If so, that person must get great deal of user input @gander2112 #prodmgmttalk -4:19 PM Sep 19th, 2011 jbrett @saeedwkhan #prodmgmttalk but isn't that the function of the PO? To sit with the team as a customer proxy? - 4:19 PM Sep 19th, 2011 gander2112 There has to be more than just drive by pushing of priorities and requirements from PM to PO. Can be separate, but close #prodmgmttalk -4:19 PM Sep 19th, 2011 gander2112 Don't get me wrong, I would love to get away from the Backlog, but it is hard to get the right balance. And right person too #prodmgmttalk -4:20 PM Sep 19th, 2011 liz_blink Not sure.
